My love for these little-shaped sandwiches started very young, as our church served them for every party function. A women’s lunch or Christmas Evepotluck these little goodies would always be there.

Tea Sandwiches were my first introduction to cream cheese cucumber combination and ham salad. We have always had dillegg salad for lunch sandwiches but having egg salad in a fancy shape makes it extra special.

How To Make Tea Party Sandwiches

They are so quick and easy to make and keep well in the refrigerator if you needed to make them the day before. Traditionally Tea sandwiches were crustless. You would purchase a regular loaf of bread remove the crust with a very sharp knife to make sure you got just the crust off and cut them into triangles and squares.

Probably around the late 60s and 70s bread companies around the holidays would make little tiny square crustless bread packages. They are not really crustless the crust is just very very light and thin. You can see one of these co*cktail loaveshere.

For my Valentine’s Day Party, triangles and squares just did not go with my heart theme, so I purchased some sturdy wheat bread and white bread that I could cut into adorable heart shapes for Valentine’s Day with my cookie cutters.

Tea Party Sandwich Recipes

There are three basic recipes for Tea Sandwiches Recipes that have been the tradition in our family and I know your family will love each one of these flavors:

  • The 1st is a very traditional Cream Cheese filling with chive and sliced cucumber on top.
  • The 2nd sandwich is a Classic Egg Salad with Dill.
  • The 3rd is a traditional Ham Salad.

Each of these recipes is a quick and easy mix and ready to spread. Get all your ingredients out and ready to go before you start. It is best if you have your eggs hard-boiled the day before and in the refrigerator so that they are cold.

What to do with the unused bread

Making shapes out of bread does leave a lot of unused bread. I took all my loose ends and put them in a plastic bag and put them in the refrigerator to use for croutons later. Everyone loves croutons no matter the shape. I just make them bit sized, toss them with olive oil, basil, and oregano, and bake at 350 until they are golden brown.

Have fun with your food and make mini sandwiches you will be surprised how they are eaten up.
