Are you living outside of Germany, too? Are you missing that dailytrip to the bakery to get your fresh Brötchen or Streuselkuchen?

You can re-create those fabulous baked goods, no matter whereyou live in the world.

Baking Just Like Oma – Paperback Cookbook (1)

When my Mutti and Papa immigrated to Canada in the 1950s withtheir young family, they worked hard to start a new life. It meant Mutti needed to experiment in the kitchen usingingredients that were foreign to her to try and capture the flavors that reminded her of the old country.

Her creativity and inventiveness won out. With a delectableButtercreme torte or a simple Obsttorte for afternoon break, thefood was so reminiscent of her traditional upbringing in Germany.

Using local ingredients can be a bit of a challenge, but German baking is actually not that difficult to replicate, especially when you have an Oma at your side.

Let me be your Oma. I’ll teach you, just like Mutti taught me.

Baking Just Like Oma – Paperback Cookbook (2)There's a special section filled with Christmas baking, just like I learned from my Mutti (2nd from the left in the photo).

The recipes that form the core for most of the cooking and bakingI do are quick, easy, and delicious. They are the ones I’ve alwaysrelied on, especially at times when my life was very busy: whenour boys were young, when I was homeschooling, and when I wasrunning a private school.

During those times, having something quick and delicious on the table, such as Apfelstrudel and no-knead Sauerteig Vollkornbrot, was really important to me.

Baking Just Like Oma – Paperback Cookbook (3)Use the tabs to quickly turn to the section you want. Here's the Apple Strudel recipe page. YUM!

Other recipes are more recent, such as Krustenbrot and Friesentorte; they are also quick, easy, and delicious and have likewise become staples.

This cookbook, Baking Just Like Oma, is a collection of these tried-and-true baking recipes. You’ll findmany of the recipes include a section called Oma’s Ecke (Grandma’s Corner) withextra info for each of those recipes.

Baking Just Like Oma – Paperback Cookbook (4)“Oma's Ecke” brings you extra help and ideas to use for that recipe. The "Tips & Hints" pages (created as coloring pages) contain wisdom gleaned from Oma's 65+ years of baking.

You’ll also find some unusual coloring pagesscattered throughout the book that contain special baking tips and hints to help you aswe travel through this German baking adventure together.

And to make it easier for everyone, I’ve adjusted these recipes to also include standardUS measurements instead of weighing the ingredients, which is the norm inGermany. Yes, weighing is more accurate, especially in baking; however, I thinkyou’ll find the recipes included here work just as well when made with cupsand measuring spoons.

Baking Just Like Oma – Paperback Cookbook (5)Can't get German baking ingredients? Don't worry. I show substitutes for them.

So, what do you say? Let’s get baking and create these mouth-watering treatsas delectable treasures to pass on to your family, just like my Mutti didfor hers.

Each of these wunderbar recipes has a black/white photo and is filled with tips and tricks, right from my kitchen.

What others are saying about Oma's cookbooks

To those who don’t know Gerhild, she’s the Oma who put German cuisine on the map with her highly popular website, justlikeoma.com. Oma dispelled, with great skill, my stereotypical view of beige-y sauce over beige-y sausage with beige-y sauerkraut and beige-y potatoes and finally - beige-y taste. I thought all German cuisine was the same - sausage. Boy was I wrong. Beautifully photographed, Oma’s recipes taste as scrumptious as they look. Look out France, Spain and Italy. A new major European cuisine is about to give you a run for our palates!

Gerhild’s Just Like Oma website has always been a go-to when I’m searching for German recipes that taste like home, so I’m absolutely delighted that her fabulous recipes have been captured in book form. This beautiful cookbook is loaded with regional recipes and mouthwatering photographs. Best of all, there are tips to insure that your dishes taste just like Oma’s. German Meals at Oma’s is destined to be a kitchen essential for all German-American kitchens.

As a German-American that is a bit culinarily challenged, this book is a true blessing! What makes this book extra wonderful is that the recipes are separated by region. German food is more complex than bratwurst, sauerkraut and pretzels! This classic cookbook has not only a variety of different recipes, but also key notes to help even those with little experience in the kitchen learn to make excellent German cuisine.

I have followed Gerhild’s recipes for many years. Her recipes are similar to the ones I grew up eating from my German heritage. I have found her recipes to be authentic and easy to understand. In Gerhild’s book, German Meals at Oma’s, I like how she divided the recipes by regions of Germany. I also love her pictures and little tips given about the recipes. These are great for the readers! I recommend this book for all cooks; beginners and experienced.

Oma lets you in on just what the recipe is (Red Cabbage and Apples) AND makes it so simple to prepare even an Irishwoman like me could follow her recipes.

This comprehensive cookbook brings back so many treasured food memories from my childhood. My German “Mutti” and her mom, my Oma, both long gone, were such great cooks, but their recipes were never written down. Gerhild Fulson’s expansive recipe collection will help people of my generation with their “lost” recipes and it will introduce new generations to German specialties that are both delicious and a part of Germany’s rich culinary culture.

I've re-created those traditional German baked treats that you recall your Oma making by using easily available ingredients.

Quick and easy. That's my motto. Wunderbar food. That's the result.

Many German recipes use ingredients only available in Germany. Since I don't live in Germany, having access to these isn’t always easy. So, I experimented with my Mutti’s recipes (many came from her hand-written notes) and made them with ingredients easily purchased at my local Canadian grocery store.

These e-cookbooks, written in English, are the result. Since they are instantly downloadable PDFs, the moment you order them, you’ll be cooking and baking just like Oma in no time at all! (Prices below are in USD.)
