Akki Roti Recipe-How to make Karnataka Akki Rotti - Padhuskitchen (2024)

I am lucky to be in a place where there are people from different states and communities. This gives me an opportunity to learn and enjoy different cuisines. I have learn’t a lot of Kannada recipes from my friend and akki roti is one of them. The first recipe I learn’t from her is authentic Karnataka Bisi Bela Bath which I have posted years back. Ok, back to akki roti- Akki Rotti is a very popular Karnataka breakfast item prepared with rice flour. Akki Rotti means rice pancake in the native language, Kannada (source-wiki). Finely chopped onions, grated carrots, chopped coriander, cumin seeds, sesame seeds and even tender mochai (field beans) can also be added to the akki roti dough. This is very simple to prepare and comes handy when you do not have dosa or idli batter at home. Today we will learn how to make Akki Roti following this easy recipe with step wise pictures.

Akki Roti Recipe-Karnataka Akki Rotti

Prep Time : 10 mins

Cook Time : 20 mins
Yields: 3 Akki rotis
Recipe Category:Breakfast
Recipe Cuisine:Karnataka

Ingredients needed

Rice flour -1 cup
Onion -2 medium size
Green chilli -2
Cumin seeds/jeera -1 tsp
Grated coconut -3 tbsp
Coriander leaves -fistful finely chopped
Salt to taste

Oil for making akki roti
Tawa/griddle or kadai

Preparation

Finely chop onions and green chillies. Grate coconut and keep it ready.

Method

In a plate or bowl, combine together, rice flour, finely chopped onions, green chillies, cumin seeds, coriander leaves, grated coconut and salt needed. Add needed water and prepare a soft dough.

Divide the dough into 3 equal parts. Grease a tawa or griddle or a kadai with oil (yes, you can prepare it in a kadai also) and keep it ready. Take a ball of dough and spread it evenly and as thinly as possible as shown in the picture below. You can grease your fingers with oil to make spreading easier. Make 5-6 holes on the roti as it will help in cooking it well.

Then heat the kadai, drizzle a tsp of oil around the rotti and inside the holes. Cook covered on medium heat.

Once it starts browning, flip it over to the other side and roast until golden brown.

If you have another tawa, you can repeat the same process for the rest of the dough, otherwise, cool the tawa by showing the back side of the tawa under running water and then spread the dough on the tawa.

Yes. In fact dill leaves make a perfect combination for akki roti. But make sure you add only a small quantity. Otherwise it might end up changing the flavor of your dish.

Hey Padhu, quick question. A friend of mine taught me to make akki roti, and she always told me to use hot water while kneading the dough. Does it make a diff if its hot or cold?

Not necessary but there is nothing wrong in using warm water. I learn' t this from a Kannada friend.

It is very difficult to make it on plastic cover, then transfer it to your hand and then to the tawa. You can do it directly on the tawa which is much easier. If you can get fresh banana leaf, it might work out as you can place the leaf with the flattened roti on the tawa and then remove it gently.

It came out very well. Thanks for the recipe. I used a parchment paper to make the roti and transferred it to tawa upside down. It was very easy. Have seen a friend use this method for Poli.
