Avocado Hummus - Vegan Family Recipes (1)

Avocado in my hummus? Yes, Please! This avocado hummus recipe is for all those who can't seem to decide if they like guacamole or hummus better. So why not combine the two and turn them into something incredible?

One of my favorite parts of not making hummus just out of chickpeas is that you can maximize the nutritional value of your hummus. Chickpeas are a great vegan fiber and protein source but sometimes it can be really heavy. Like major food baby-heavy (thankfully it's still sweater season). You know what I'm talking about. :D Adding avocado adds some heart-healthy fat to your hummus and will lighten it up a bit so your not eating pure protein.

I made the avocado hummus without tahini this time but it really didn't need it. I'm not really into adding ingredients to recipes just for kicks. They should only be there for a reason. So be gone, tahini! This is nice for this hummus recipe since tahini isn't something most people (I'm not most people) always have at home.

Anyways, you are going to make the avocado hummus the same way you would any other hummus recipe. Surprise! Surprise!

Dump it all into your food processor and blend until smooth.

Once it's nice and creamy, put it in a bowl, sprinkle it with some red pepper flakes, and eat it up!

Oh and if you ever wanted to try to sneak avocado into your kid's food or diet, this is the way! Couldn't keep my boy's little paws out of it! Weirdly, my kids didn't even mind the red pepper flakes.

Recipe Notes

1.) If hummus is too thick, add more water. If it is too runny, add a few more chickpeas.2) This hummus is made without tahini. You can add tahini or sesame paste to this recipe if you like for a more "traditional" hummus flavor. Add a bit more water, lime juice, and salt to taste and texture.

If you are too worried about calories in hummus then try the Cucumber hummus instead.

You and I both have such similar recipes on our blog, LOL! Great minds think alike :) I have an avocado hummus on my blog as well. I add tahini to mine and some cumin for a smoky kick. I love the chili flakes you added...seriously, I add those to nearly everything I eat...I'm kind of addicted to them. Yours looks SO good! Yummy!

I'm so glad you liked it! I make this avocado hummus for my boys all the time because they love it so much. If I'm making it for myself I usually add extra garlic too :)

With or without the red pepper flakes this hummus recipe is awesome!!! I love avocado in everything why not in hummus! I added a little tahini in my 2nd batch to make it a little thicker but I honestly enjoyed it both ways!! I use red and green pepper slices for dipping, my husband prefers other veggies and pita chips. It's a very versatile dip - thank you for posting it!!!

Thanks Jackie! My whole family is OBSESSED with avocado hummus. It never last longer than 20 minutes in our house. You should try it on a wrap or sandwich. So so good! :)

This looks great! I want to make for my st pattys day party. How far in advance can I make it? It has avocado but there is also lime, so I wondered how quick it would turn dark?

Hi Heather, I usually make it the same day , especially when serving it at a party. If you make it in the morning, cover it with plastic wrap or put it in an airtight container then it will still be nice and green by the afternoon.

Just made this and am very happy with how it turned out. I have sensitivities to Sesame seeds, so this is a great fine for me! Nice consistency and great taste.

This was my first homemade humus. So simple and delicious! I love the avocado instead of olive oil. Do you have any idea of the calories and protein values?
